Salil Shetty served as Secretary General of Amnesty International from 2010 to 2018, leading one of the world's most influential human rights organisations at a time of unprecedented challenge for civil liberties and democratic values globally.
Under his leadership, Amnesty International expanded its reach and influence significantly, growing its global membership and developing new campaigning strategies to respond to human rights crises from the Arab Spring to the refugee crisis and beyond.
Before Amnesty, he served as Director of the United Nations Millennium Campaign, working to promote the Millennium Development Goals worldwide. A lawyer by training from India, he has dedicated his career to the promotion of human rights, development and social justice across the world.
