Jay Sean is a British singer-songwriter of Indian heritage who became one of the first British Asian artists to achieve major mainstream success in the United States.
Born Kamaljit Singh Jhooti in London, he achieved international fame with his 2009 single Down, which reached Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 — making him the first British Asian solo artist to top the American charts.
His success opened doors for a generation of British Asian artists and demonstrated that Asian musicians could compete at the very highest levels of the global music industry. He signed with Cash Money Records and collaborated with artists including Lil Wayne.
